Isegoria is an independent, Open Access digital publisher of learned books and journals in Classical Studies, World Archaeology, and the Humanities based in Nottingham. Founded by two classicists and professional editors, the publishing house aspires to live up to its name and offer a platform for researchers to present their work without costs or any other barrier. We rely on external funding from our donors, sponsors, and patrons, and therefore do not charge authors any fees.
The main language of publication is English, the only language we are comfortable editing, with ample room for authors to use their preferred language (in long summaries, video abstracts, presentations, and other content). Isegoria offers free language editing services to remove the language barrier and support colleagues from around the world to publish their research in English for an international audience.
Moreover, Isegoria values all languages and invites submissions for edited volumes and conference proceedings in the language of the editors’/organisers' preference. For the purpose of wide outreach and dissemination of knowledge, we ask the editors to provide a long summary of the edited volume in English or a bilingual introduction (in the preferred language of the editors and in English). We approach PhD theses in a similar manner: the authors' preferred language with a long summary in English (at least 5,000 words).
Isegoria is committed to the free, unrestricted dissemination of knowledge produced around the world.
We provide genuinely supportive, personalised, professional service and we work closely with authors to develop their ideas. Our purpose is to support scholars worldwide and build bridges for collaboration and communication to facilitate progress.
For Global Scholars, we:
For established academia in ‘the Global North’, we:
For both, we:
We prioritise members of groups currently under-represented in Global Classical Studies.
We prioritise ideas and argumentation over style, and provide free, in-house editorial services (language and developmental editing, formatting) to support authors.
We work collaboratively with authors and reviewers to improve research outcomes and promote important work conducted worldwide.
We encourage diversity and widen participation in a truly global environment.
No author will be sent away on account of income, language, status, position, race, or gender.
In our view, Global Scholars who author their research in English already make a huge step in exiting their comfort zone; therefore, they should not be the ones that have to bear all additional costs and be burdened with additional workload to tailor their manuscript to immovable language requirements. In an era that purports to embrace inclusivity and diversity, the strict requirement to abide by a single modus scribendi appears counterproductive at best.
English is widely spoken across the world in many forms, most of which pertain to native speakers of different locales (Zimbabwe, New Zealand, Canada, Jamaica, Nigeria, United States, and many others). The insistence on imposing a single form of English as a bare minimum for publishing one’s work to a global audience fails to serve the purpose it purports to advocate. We believe that language should be a medium of unity and progress, not exclusion.
We at Isegoria believe in pulling down barriers. No author will be sent away and no submission will be rejected on the grounds of language or style. Instead, we work with authors constructively to improve their work and perhaps bring it closer to Anglophone academic standards, respecting the author’s voice and affinity to other research traditions and environments at all times.
Our decision to publish manuscripts depends on merit, originality, and value alone. If the idea is there, we work with authors on style. We put the time and effort to provide full editorial services, from editing to formatting and developmental editing, so that Global Scholars can focus on what they do best: researching, thinking, and writing. We provide a platform for scholars across the world to publish their research in English without the common barriers in the market, undeterred by questions on language and style, and reach to a global audience. Isegoria is a project run by scholars for the benefit of scholars.
